Gastric Bypass Surgery: Potential Major Treatment for Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes?

Many people often get stuck when it comes to surgical operations, let alone gastric bypass surgery. I myself spent months contemplating the idea and another few months preparing for the big day. It also took me one deadly warning before I gave it a go. Well my doctor’s overwhelming honesty sounded like a death threat which made me realize I did need it.

And I am glad I did. Things happened in my favor since I got out of the hospital.

Gastric bypass surgery has done a great deal of improvement on my health and weight of course. It did not happen overnight. Everything was dramatic, but it’s a good kind of drama.

I have had more control over my diet during the first few months after the operation. Once I got back to my senses, I jumped back to work and increased my activities. I enrolled at a gym for 3x a week workout; I do a lot of hiking and walking; spend more time away from the computer.

But wait there’s more.

I happened to read this article about the possible yet unexplored effects gastric bypass surgery. Even doctors are still baffled by the wonders of Science until now that they find no concrete explanation why this happens.

Gastric Bypass Surgery and Obesity

Obese people are at high risk of developing major health conditions. These include heart attack, stroke, sleep apnea, hypertension, Diabetes, kidney, and liver problems. I am the living proof of that so I can say this is true. Obesity has become a plague, so to speak, but doctors believe that gastric bypass can solve  this.

A recent study showed that 97% of gastric bypass surgery patients reported changes in their appetite. Meanwhile, 43% reported that their sense of smell changed.

In particular, these patients developed unexplained distaste for sweets, starches, dairies, and meat products. This effect is the clear cause of  weight loss, since these are what makes up the standard American diet.

Researchers are yet to determine the exact link between gastric bypass surgery and these changes. But, they are looking into the intestinal hormones and central nervous system reactions.

So, the medical community needs to conduct further research before arriving at a conclusion. This would establish gastric bypass surgery as an official treatment for obesity.

Should You Consider Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Obesity cases are becoming worse. With the growing number of people suffering from its complications, this is almost out of the question.

A lot of people are reluctant about surgeries. But, good things may follow as long as you are ready to commit to a lifelong lifestyle change.
